SWLFC 1st 2 : 6 Ossett Utd

First game back after 4 months and a tough start against established premier league opposition made worse by the fact that we only had 12 players available due to circumstances that couldn't be helped.

The first half was an even affair with both teams evenly matched, Ossett took the lead with 17 minutes on the clock with a good header from a corner. The Owls should've equalised 10 minutes later when awarded a penalty for hand ball but Fay Cassidy put the spot kick wide. Chances were few for both teams with Emily Higgins unlucky with a shot on goal before Ossett were fortunate to take a 2 goal lead when a cross from wide right dropped over Laura in goal with her unlucky not to have kept it out.

Half Time: 0 : 2

Other than the two goals the opposition had not troubled the Owls but they stepped up their game in the second half and deserved the victory based upon their second half showing. The Owls were up against it with both Sophie Trotter and Jess Birtles picking up injuries and the lack of substitutes taking its toll on the others players fitness. Meanwhile Ossett had the luxury of being able to make numerous swaps through the half. Take nothing away from the opposition they upped their game and deserved the victory.

Ossett made it 3-0 on 67 minutes with a tap in after great play from their number 9 out wide, 4-0 with a soft free header at the back post from a free kick and 5-0 with a fluke of a goal when Laura's clearance struck the advancing striker and rebounding into the goal.

The Owls did put in a big effort in the final 15 minutes forcing an Ossett defender into putting the ball in her own net after a great move involving Olivia, Jodie and Annie 1-5. A delightful chip on the break gave Ossett a 6-1 lead before Jess Birtles scored a great header from a Emma Otley free kick, 2-6. There were a few efforts from Demi West, Annie Timmis and Jodie Stancill late in the game but the game finished 2-6.

Manager Dave Higgins:

A tough opening game with a lot of tired legs, not a lot between the teams and although the scoreline flattered the opposition take nothing away from them, they deserved the win based upon their second half performance. Lets hope for quick recovery from the injuries we picked up and a couple more players available.
