Altofts AFC 0 : 2 SWLFC 1st

Michelle Stephens, Lucie Spendiff, Sophie Trotter, Sophie Eyre, Jess Birtles,

Demi West, Jodie Stancill, Jess Morrison, Liv Murray, Nicole Cooper,

Molly Corke, Courtney Livsey, Channy Rymer, Emily Higgins.

The ladies travelled to West Yorkshire to face the team that pipped the Owls to runners up spot in the league in the final game of last season.

A non-eventful first half between two evenly matched teams ensued with limited goal scoring opportunities. Altofts had the first chance when they crossed the ball across the face of the Wednesday goal in the 3rd minute but with no one able to get on the end of it. The opposition managed two further shots which both went wide before testing Michelle in goal who had to save a strong shot in the 33rd minute. Wednesday had managed 4 attempts, a Channy free kick flying wide and a further shot from her that went wide. Jess did force a great save from the Altofts keeper and again saw a shot fly just wide of the upright on 44 minutes.

Half time: 0-0

A change of formation proved a game changer with the Owls taking control of the second period. Jess set off on a mazy run just 8 minutes in with the final shot flying just over the crossbar. Channy and Sophie Eyre combined well with Sophies shot hitting the post on 12 minutes. Altofts didn’t manage a shot on target throughout the 2nd period but the Owls were unlucky with shots from Nicole Cooper (25 mins) Jess again (27 mins) Fay Cassidy from distance. A goal from the Owls looked likely and it was 1-0 on 29 minutes when Jess picked up a loose ball just in the opposition’s half, she passed two dfenders and with the keeper closing her down she chipped the ball over her and into the goal. It was 2-0 just 5 minutes later when Molly Corke played a great little ball over the defence for Jess once to once more collect and lob the keeper for another sublime finish. There was still time for Emily Higgins to have a close-range effort stopped and Liv Murray to battle through two challenges before having her shot saved.

Full Time: 2-0

Manager Dave Higgins comments:

Today was always going to be a tough game against one of the teams that are tipped to be challenging for the title. Nothing between the teams in the first period but after a half time chat we decided to change things around and it paid off. I thought that the first to score would probably go on to win and two super finishes and a great squad performance earned us the 3 points. Also great to see Jess Birtles returning to the club after 5 years and managing 70 minutes after a long time out due to injury. So that’s 4 games, 4 wins and top of the league at the moment but very early days. Next up Bradford Park Avenue on Sunday 13th at Bawtry road.
