First team report: March 2019
Harrogate Railway 3 : 3 SWLFC 1st
Last Sunday saw our ladies First team travel to Harrogate Railway for the last game of the season. Results the previous week meant that our ladies had secured 3rd place and were no longer able to catch Altofts LFC who held the league runners up spot.
The game kicked off and the Owls made a great start with Jess Morrison scoring after just 6 minutes rounding the keeper and slotting home after a great pass from Jodie Stancill. It was at this stage that the squad slipped into end of season mode and Harrogate stepped up their game. Harrogate scored 3 goals on 27, 24 and 41 minutes to take a deserved 3-1 lead into the break.
A few harsh words were spoken at half time about a lethargic first half and to see if we could come off the pitch at full time with our heads held high having given a better account of ourselves.
The team certainly took on board the comments with Emily Higgins having a shet pushed wide by the keeper just 3 minutes into the 2nd period. Jess was through on goal just 5 minutes later and hit the ball just over the bar after a great solo run. Emma Otley shot wide and Jess again found herself though on goal but this time hit the ball wide of goal. It was 3-2 on 60 minutes when a super shot from Emma was only parried into the air by the keeper with the ball dropping over her and into the net.
The Owls were dominant in this half and limited Harrogate to a couple of half chances with the best being a header that went wide of goal. The score was level shortly after when a great ball from Jess saw Jodie Stancill through on goal and her shot flew over the keeper for 3-3. The Owls kept on pressing but Harrogate defended well and with no further goals the game finished 3-3.
Manager Dave Higgins commented:
A poor first half and then a total contrast in the second half, a draw was just about a fair result even though we probably had the better of the chances. Disappointed not to have taken the league runners up spot as I think we were good enough to have done after beating 2nd placed Altofts 5-1 earlier in the season and been unlucky in the return where we lost 3-1 having only 10 players available. All in all a decent season taking into account injuries and player availability.
With a big shake up of the senior section coming in the close season and a great crop of players coming up from the junior section we are already looking forward to next season.
