This was our First teams last game of the season away against an Altofts side who started the game in 2nd place with our ladies sat in 4th place but coming into the game on the back of two wins on the trot. The latest of those being the 2-1 win over league champions Harrogate Town. This was to be another game where we travelled with just a bare 11 but hoping to keep the run of good performances going.

The first half was a scrappy affair which saw Altofts the better of the two teams. The Owls managed a handfull of half chances which included Wendy Elwood hitting a 7th minute long range shot, Emily Higgins shooting wide on 23 minutes and Emma hitting a great free kick that sailed just over the bar just before half time. Altofts had taken the lead in the 20th minute after our ladies stopped to appeal for what looked an offside decision but the ref had rightly waved play on and with 3 opposition players bearing down on goal it was no surprise the ball was slotted home for 1-0. With half time looming and 0-1 looking a decent scoreline for us to take into the break disaster struck when a long ball found its way to our corner flag and with no one around the ball was carried up field before being given away to the opposition and three passes later the ball was lobbed over Emily in goal who had no chance for 0-2.

Half Time: 0-2

A disappointing first half performance for us and the half time talk consisted of us rallying the troops and the players insisting that the 2nd half had to be better with the emphasis of enjoying the last 45 minutes of the season and at least winning the second half. The ladies definately lifted their game for the final 45 minutes, Channy had a free kick saved in the 47th minute and our play was much better, Altofts still looked dangerous especially from some great corner kicks which fortunatley for us everyone was cleared. Altofts should have scored on 56 minutes but after good build up play the ball was put well wide of goal. On 59 minutes the game changed due to Amy Beck through on goal after a pass from Sophie Eyre. There was a suspicion of offside but the ref waved play on and Amy powered through and hit a shot that gave the keeper no chance 1-2 and game on!

Other than two attempts on goal that produced great saves from Emily, Altofts were second best for the rest of the half and the Owls equalised on 72 minutes through a great goal by Stacey, Emily played the ball to her and she beat her player turned inside and curled a great shot past the stranded keeper for 2-2. Our lot took a deserved lead on 80 minutes when Channy took a quick throw to Wendy who crossed the ball to the back post where Amy once again hit a cracking shot past the keeper to make it 3-2 to the Owls. There was still time for two more efforts with Amy unlucky not to have got her hat trick when the keeper pulled off a great save from her shot and then in the closing minutes wendy too hit a shot that was comfortably saved.

Full Time: 3-2

Managers comments:

So a great second half to take all 3 points and leap frog into 2nd place in the table. The two teams below have games in hand so it will be a couple of weeks before we know our final position. I was very proud of that second half performance and the last three results. All in all, a great end to the season beating the top two teams but its dropped points and a difficulty in turning out a full squad every week that has probably cost us promotion this season. I would just like to thank the girls who have remained loyal and turned up week in week out and chosen to look for success and play their football as a team rather than looking for individual glory at an higher level. We lost a lot of players in the close season due to injuries, retirement and higher level clubs taking a shine to our players (both through correct channels and not so correct) but thats football. Thank you also to "our Jules" for keeping me and the team on the straight and narrow and to the regulars who turn up week in week out to support the ladies.

Cheers and heres to next season????????
