SWLFC 1st 1 : 4 Ossett Albion
1. Kirsty Johnson, 1. Emily Darwin, 4. Emma Otley, 6. Sophie Eyre, 7. Emily Higgins,
10. Channy Rymer, 11. Stacey Buxton, 14. Brooke Marsden, 16. Ali Cutting,
17. Wendy Elwood, 22. Sophie Trotter, 23. Fay Cassiday.
Another threadbare squad with 12 players including Kirsty Johnson available for a rare outing in between the posts which allowed regular Keeper Emily Darwin to make up the numbers by playing out wide on the right. Late fitness checks on Fay Cassiday and Sophie Eyre deemed them "fit" enough to be involved today.
A great move and solo run from Brooke Marsden just 5 minutes in was finished with her shot rattling the upright which should have put the Owls 1-0 up.Just a minute later and Ossett managed to clear the ball after a goal mouth scramble with our girls unlucky to not to have put the ball in the net. It was however 1-0 to Ossett in the 10th minute after a great move was clinically finished past Kirsty in goal. Stacey Buxton and Sophie Eyre both had half chances before Sophie had to leave the pitch due to her reoccuring injury with Fay cassiday replacing her.
Ossett were playing the better of the football and extended their lead to 2-0 after another well taken goal slotted past Kirsty in goal on 32 minutes. Emily Higgins was unlucky shooting wide after the keepers bad clearance. Brooke Marsden had to leave the field of play on 35 minutes and with no fit substitutes Sophie took the decision to go back on the pitch despite her injury. Osset were now comfortably in control and were playing some great passing football and with both midfielders Sophie & Fay struggling they were having the better of the possession in the middle of the park. They took full advantage and made it 3-0 on 41 minutes again shooting past Kirsty in goal.
Half time: 0-3
Even with the excuses it had been a very poor first half from our ladies and a stern word or three at half time with the instructions to go out and show that you want to be a part of the game seemed to work. Every player gave their all and battled on to take the game to Ossett. With our lot pushing to get back in the game, Ossett counter attacked and were stopped and awarded a free kick. The free kick was hit sweetly and again beat Kirsty in goal for 4-0. The highlight of the half was when Emily Darwin who had not stopped running in her stand in role of right winger hit a great shot which gave the Ossett keeper no chance for 4-1 with 20 minutes to play. The game played out with our girls having the majority of possession but Ossett still looking dangerous when they had the ball without creating too many chances.
Full Time: 1-4.
A poor first half for our lot but fair play to Ossett they were the better team by a mile, played some great passing football and scored some lovely goals. We played much better in the 2nd half and managed a 1-1 draw. Big thanks to the girls who played the game despite being ill and injured, if we have had anything like a squad today then 4 of those wouldn't have been on the pitch today. Also if I did "Player of the match" it would have gone to goal keeper Emily Darwin who played right wing today and got on the score sheet for the first time in many years.
We just have to get thorugh next weeks game v Swallownest and then we get a break until the New year when we may have news on returning and new players. It was also frustrating that both our Reserves and Development teams had games today and were also short on players otherwise we may have had a few options. Roll on the New Year.
