The 1st team travelled to Barnsley for the penultimate game of the season. With 3rd place guaranteed, our ladies needed two wins from the last two games to give themselves a chance to finish league runners up with 2nd placed Alrofts having to win their game v Harrogate today to finish the Owls chances of pinching 2nd place.......

Playing on the new Dorothy Hyman 4G surface and in windy conditions the Owls had the wind at their backs for the first half and bossed the half with our defence containing the home team who were unable to record any attempts on goal. It was a different story for our lot who had numerous chances with the keeper saving most of them and others being off target. Fay Cassiday headed over from close range on 22 minutes, Jess Morrison had 3 great chances to score but to no avail but It was 1-0 on 32 minutes with a piece of brilliance from Emily Higgins who chased a ball from Phoebe Davis to the by line, flicked the ball over her head and then again flicked the ball over the defender before hitting a close range shot giving the keeper no chance. It was 2-0 on 44 minutes when Channy Rymer fed by Fay Cassiday cut inside her player and from 30 yards curled a right foot shot that dipped over the keeper and into the top corner to take the 2-0 into the break.

Half time: 0 - 2

With the wind in their faces in the 2nd half the Owls continued to control the game and again had enough efforts on goal to have come away with a comfortable score line. Jess again having a couple of good chances but it just wasn't her day today, Phoebe Davis had a long range effort sail wide and our goal keeper Emily Darwin playing out field today also had a great chance and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Barnsley managed their one attempt on goal on 65 minutes with a long range shot that flew well over the bar. It was game over on 72 minutes when an inch perfect cross from Channy Rymer was met by Emily Higgins whose close range bullet header made it 3-0 and all 3 points heading back to Sheffield.

Full Time: 0 - 3

Manager Dave Higgins commented:

A great team performance across the park today, the defence were awesome giving Michelle in goal a very quiet day, Midfield worked their socks off as did the wingers, and the two up front continued to torment the Barnsley defence and test their keeper. Unfortunately Altofts scraped a 3-2 victory over Harrogate to guarantee them 2nd place with our ladies assured of a 3rd place finish. I am gutted for the team not to have had a chance to snatch the 2nd place next week as I believe they deserve it. A bad result against York Railway early in the season has cost us as well as an injury list bordering on the ridiculous. Although we hit 5 past Altofts in our first game we lost out 3-1 in the return with us having no keeper and only 10 players but fair play to Altofts though, their runners up spot was deserved with their win against Ossett.

Next week the final game of the season Harrogate away. UTO! #oneteam
