Second meeting in two week between us, with last week’s semi-final going all the way to penalties, and us coming out on top. We knew how tough this game was going to be after last week, as we knew Sheffield FC would really come for us after having knocked them out of the cup last week, and the league title still up for grabs. Brooke returned this week, but we were without Katrina, Emily and Danni. Sheffield FC started as we expected them to, all guns blazing for the first 20 minutes. The hardest 20 minutes we have had to deal with all year! How we came out of the that spell without conceding I’m not sure. The Sheffield FC spell of pressure was put to an end when Becs took a shot from outside the box, and the keeper hesitated to go to the ball, and that gave Olivia just enough of a chance to get there first and poke home! Justifying her selection up top. A huge weight seemed to lift off our shoulders, and we doubled our lead soon after, around the 25 mark when Olivia, grabbed her second of the day. The celebrations were a joy to see. Sheffield FC kept at it, trying to get back into the game and they put together some good moves, but our back three, Rach Jodie, Nicole and Lisa in net, stood strong and the wing backs in the first half, Brooke Jiggy and Becs, later on in the half, were exceptional in the work they put in. Lisa made some fantastic last minute saves aswell challenging players when one on one, and she wouldn’t be beat! We grabbed our third just before half time around the 40 minute mark, when she picked the ball up just inside the box and as she has doe many a time this season, dance through 3 or 4 players, before firing home with her left foot.
HT 0-3 – Could not have expected this half to go any better, when they needed to fight in the first 20 minutes they did, and when they got the goal there was no looking back, the midfield also came more into the game after the first goal with Becs Chloe and Courtney winning a lot of the ball, and then Izzy added to that when called upon. Olivia and Brooke both outstanding in the first half with Olivia giving up on nothing and getting her rewards, and Brooke adding some real quality in attack.
We started the second half and got our fourth around 5 minutes into it when Courtney created some space for herself just outside the box and then arrowed a goal right into the top corner! From this point on the game very even, and Sheffield FC probably created the better opportunities, hitting the crossbar, missing an open net, and two lung busting recovery runs and last ditch tackles from Olivia who had moved out to the left hand side. However we threatened so well on the counter, and when the ball found Daisy she was constantly looking for a killer pass, and her link up play with Hannah was really good. Daisy got the team fifth after a bouncing ball found her in the box, and she span and hit it on the volley, a unstoppable shot! After this we gained more control with Izzy and Chloe finding some great passes and the back 3 were dealing easily with the long ball that inevitably came From Sheffield. Then the final whistle!
FT 0-5 – What a victory for the ladies! One which puts us 3 points away from winning the title! All 13 we had on the day battled the entire game, and when we had our chances, we had the quality to put the ball in the back of the net! All the parts of our game came together today, the back 3’s organisation, the quality we have in front of goal, and the passing we have worked on came into the game when we were on top in spells. 3 times we have played Sheffield FC, our closest challenges, and we have scored 7 and conceded 0 in them games!
MOM – Olivia Mellor – Set the tone when she grabbed her two goals with her grit and determination and never giving up! That same effort and never giving up attitude meant she also made two last ditch tackles in the second half! A passionate, inspiring performance from her and showing sometimes the best thing you can do on a football pitch, is never give up and never stop running!
