Another day, another dilema for the team. Circumstances away from the game and pure bad luck meant the squad lost players and travelled to 3rd placed Altofts with just 10 players and no goal keeper. Captain Sophie Eyre came home early from a birthday weekend away to volunteer to take up goal keeper duties.
A great first half for the Owls with it not noticble that it was 11-10 on the pitch. Our ladies took the lead on 11 minutes when Emma otley took two attempts before firing home from a Demi West throw in. The lead lasted for just 4 minutes when Demi unfortunatley gave away a soft penalty tripping an Altofts player in the box, the spot kick was put away for 1-1. There were not many clear cut chances for either team but the Owls just edged the half with Jess having a shot saved early in the game and Emma watching her 25 yard free kick saved too. A stray back pass also presented our girls with a chance before the ball was smothered by the Altofts keeper. Other than the penalty Altofts had managed just a couple of half chances one of which a shot that went wide of goal on 40 minutes
Half Time: 1-1
Our girls had edged the first half and came out confident that they could get a result even with the player disadvantage. Altofts had a different plan and they took the lead in 54 minutes through a scarmbled goal that we cleared twice before the third shot was scrambled over the line for 2-1.Stand in keeper Sophie Eyre pulled off a great save just 5 minute laters that any keeper would have been proud of. The rest of the half was played out with neither team creating any clear chances and the Owls still looking like they might get something out of the game. 30 minutes into the half and it was game over when the Altofts left back hit a loose ball from 30 yards out that flew into the top left corner giving Sophie no chance. To be fair it was one of those "worldies" you hit once in a lifetime but a fantastic strike and worthy of winning any game.
Although the Owls threw everything forward and always looked dabgerous the game played out without any further score.
Full Time: 3-1
Very proud of the team today. No goal keeper, our midfield captain in goal and just 10 players who more than held there own. I thought we were the better team in the first half and although Altofts edged the second half it was a scrambled goal and a 30 yard "worldie" that was the difference between the two teams. always nice to receive praise from the opposition management who said we had been fantastic today. Also to hear an opposition supporter only realise we had 10 players 15 minutes into the second half.
Well done girls, next up Harrogate Town at home and still plenty to play for.
